O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high marks by the panel of judges. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, and then second place. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. With consistently excellent performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history.
